In 2019, Amina Hassan Gummi was admitted to study Mass Communication, a four-year program at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. Amina never knew her career path when she first set foot on campus until she found love in journalism – a career path, paved by her course of study.

“Indeed I’m a passionate young journalist who has the readiness to study and explore journalism— a vocation I only see whenever I sight my future”

Amina began to roam the route of journalism sometime during her second semester as a sophomore student in UDUS with one Sokoto State Vision FM; a time when the UDUS campus Radio was not functioning. Speaking of Amina’s passion for journalism, she schedules her holidays for learning the scope and skills of practicing journalism at the Radio station.

As a passionate young journalist, she was embraced and given an eye-opening opportunity to explore the profession with the professionals which helped her a lot in shaping her perspective and understanding of the profession.

The Transitioning

Amina became the youngest journalist to work with Alu TV as an undergraduate student of Mass Communications— an exciting growth from being a campus reporter to the limelight.

“I started as a reporter, Newscaster and producer of the program titled ‘Campus life on Alu TV Nigeria’. Also here on campus I’m the Head of News, producer, caster, translator as well as the anchorer of the program titled ‘Professor of the Week,” she said.

As an ALU TV reporter, she explained the groundbreaking events she had covered. Also, she spoke of her commitment to UDUS campus Radio where she covered and reported events happening both inside and beyond the walls of the university. A skilled reporter like Amina was able to cover the 2023/2024 session of UDUS Cultural Day staged by the Student Union not too long ago. She also covered the Pen-Day ceremony, just to state a few from her long list.

How my Discipline influences my journalism career

Amina asserts that her course of study serves as the manure that fertilizes her quick growth which exposes her to greater opportunities and connections she might never have envisioned.

“My course of study, which is Mass Communications, helps me a lot. Since I joined media organizations, I’ve experienced in considerable events the zeal in people trying to contribute positively to my journalism career whenever they are aware I am studying Mass Communication. The Professionals in the room are willing to help me put into practice everything I have learned in class; I’m always thrilled and grateful” she narrated
