Usmanu Yakubu Usmanu’s foray into campus journalism was marked by uncertainty. As a novice journalist, he struggled to pitch stories, wondering how to craft narratives that would impact society. “I was clueless,” he admits. “I didn’t know how to go about pitching a story.”

Usman’s ignorance was short-lived, thanks to his determination and mentorship from Abdulrasheed Hammad. With Hammad’s guidance, Yakubu swiftly grasped the art of pitching stories. His first story, which exposed gross corruption and decay in the education system, was immediately accepted.

Usman’s passion for investigative writing stems from his desire to expose societal ills. “I love investigation stories because they make a quick impact and expose corruption,” he explains. His dedication to this genre earned him recognition, with his story being shortlisted for the Campus Journalism Awards 2024.

The award ceremony, held at Cosmopolitan University in Abuja, celebrated campus journalists’ commitment to upholding justice and promoting democratic values. Yakubu, an immediate graduate of Literature in English from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, secured the first runner-up position in the Investigative Journalists category.

Yakubu’s reaction to his win was one of surprise and humility. “Seriously, I couldn’t believe it when I was called as the 1st runner up,” he says. “It’s a great motivation for continuity, but the journey is mainly to be dutiful to society.”

On social media, Yakubu expressed his gratitude, stating that being among the finalists was an achievement in itself. He also shared his dream of meeting veteran journalists, which was fulfilled at the Abuja ceremony.

Collaborate With Fellow Campus Journalists – Usman Advises

Usman’s advice to campus journalists is to strive hard, be dedicated, and engage in research and reading. “Collaborating with fellow campus journalists is crucial,” he emphasizes. “Aspiring journalists should read and be open to learning from each other.”

He encourages young journalists to utilize resources like the Abdullahi Fodio Library, where they can access hardcopies of newspapers and hone their writing skills. “Writing impactful stories should be their priority,” he concludes.
