Jimoh Hussein Kehinde reports,
As strike looms, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UDUS chapter has released a press statement on the 9th of February, 2022. The statement comes after the body had already held a congress two days earlier on the 7th of February, 2022.
The meeting, however, was held in bid to make a choice whether to embark on strike or not and to make further progress in sensitizing and mobilizing members, student-bodies and the general public so see things along with them in the strive to save the Nigerian public University system from being debased.
The promise made by the Federal Government in 2009, ASUU/government memorandum of agreement that’s yet to be fulfilled and the immediate deployment of UTAS, and the unpaid salaries of some of ASUU members among other sorts of discharged agreements by the Federal Government keep being the reason for the abrupt threats of the industrial action.
However, the released statement stated that ASUU-UDUS had held a congress on the 7th of February, 2022 to first; expressed their greif over government’s failed promises, second; to inform the public their loyalty to the leading body of ASUU in fighting for the needed good course, and third; that should FG fail to implement all their promises, the body would return its earlier suspended action among other purposes.
The press release by ASUU-UDUS also says that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) patriotically believes in functional and excellent education in Nigeria as no Nation develops without education in place and for ASUU as a union, is comprised of members who are patriotic Nigerians in the sense that they have decided not to leave their country for greener pasture but choose to stay to contribute to the general development of the nation.
