Ayanlere Aishat reports,

Following Pen Press’s report on the harassment of female students at a private hostel in Benji, the landlord has repaired the compound’s entrance door, which had been unusable for weeks before the incident.

This was disclosed to Pen Press after inquiries following the earlier publication, in which residents said the faulty door had gone unrepaired for weeks, a lapse they believe gave the intruder room to access the compound undetected.

Recall that Pen Press reported on Sunday , August 23, 2026, how an unidentified man entered the hostel in the early hours of the same day and harassed several female students across multiple rooms while they slept. Residents had linked the incident partly to poor compound security, including the broken entrance door.

Following the report, the landlord visited the hostel and promised a prompt repair. The work has now been completed, with a new instruction that the entrance be locked by exactly 12:00 a.m. each night.

Halimah (Pseudonym), a first year Optometry student who lives there  says the repaired door now gives her a sense of security. “It’s like having a security guard at the entrance,” she said. Another resident said she no longer worries about unwanted visitors entering the compound and feels safer moving around at night.

Students say they hope the fix restores a measure of security, though they continue to press for a more consistent security presence within the compound.
