On the eve of April 1, 2024, a Facebook user, African King, posted a screenshot of a day-old post, allegedly made by Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Davido. From the screenshot, it appeared that the singer made the post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, threatening to unleash his ‘inner portable’ against his colleagues.
The post about the sensational tweet, attributed to the “Sensational” crooner drew a lot of interaction, with over 50k, 2k and 80 reactions, comments and shares, respectively, by the time PEN PRESS filed this report.
With the caption, “SHOCKING Davido causes commotion as he replies Burna boy, Buju and Rexxie all together,” the self-acclaimed public figure shared a post which claimed that Davido wrote, “when I go release my inner portable..Burna boy, buju and Rexxie won’t last a day in the industry” and signed it with a hashtag, ‘#timeless, which he uses to promote his most recent body of work, the album, Timeless.
While fans felt that the musician could have made this tweet as he had, reportedly, been the target of cryptic social media posts made by his colleagues, Burna boy, Bnxn (FKA Buju) and Rexxie, whom he had allegedly threatened in the tweet, some fans were quick to discredit the claim, attributing it to April Fool’s Day.
To ascertain the accuracy of this claim, PEN PRESS visited the singer’s official handle but could not find the post. An advanced search using the keywords in the tweet also yielded no results.
According to the timestamp on the screenshot, “1d”, which means “1 day”, the tweet had been online for more than 24 hours before the screenshot was made, suggesting that, even if the artiste deleted it eventually, there would have been numerous screenshots and blog posts about it, as evident from the reported rows he had with his colleagues. However, PEN PRESS found none upon conducting a keyword search, using Google, to confirm such instances.
VERDICT:
PEN PRESS concludes that the screenshot of the post attributing the incendiary comment to Davido is fake and the resulting claim is equally fictitious, hence, the claim is MISLEADING!
