On Wednesday, 13th of September, 2023, a claim circulated on Social Media that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved new courses to be offered at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS).

The post made by a Facebook user, Yahaya Dogondaji reads: “#NUC Approves New courses to be offered in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

“Cyber Security, Criminology and Security Studies, Software Engineering, Shariah, Quranic Studies, Hadith, Pharm Doctor of pharmacy, Local Government and Administration Studies”.

As of the time of filling this report, the post had attracted over 650 likes, with 37 comments and shared by 28 Facebook users.

Recall that a circular dated 13th September, 2023 was released by the Management of UDUS through the Academic planning unit, signed by Director Academic Planning unit Dr. K.G Muhammad, that the institution awaits the visit of the National Universities Commission (NUC) on a Resource Assessment Visit which is expected to commence on 25th September, 2023.

However, the resource Assessment Visit is to seek approval for (13) newly introduced undergraduate and (15) postgraduate programs.

Like Yahaya Dogondaji, another Facebook user named Yusuf Abdulazeez also posted on his Facebook page on 13th of September, 2023 with the same claim that NUC has approved new undergraduate and postgraduate programs, seeking the widespread dissemination of the claim.

“From The Caliphate School of Criminology and Security, Sokoto, Nigeria.

“Good evening Sir/Madam,

“This is to inform you that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved new progprograms at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) with effect from the 2023/2024 academic session, specifically September 2023.

“The Department of Sociology, UDUS will be a home to new students, who are interested in a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology and Security Studies (B.Sc.) and those ta hat have a keen interest in pursuing a professional Master’s Degree in Criminology and Security Studies (MCSS).

“Also, an academic Master’s Degree in Social Policy, (M.Sc. Social Policy), which would be domiciled in the Department of Sociology is in the pipeline, possibly before the end of 2nd semester of the 2022/2023 academic session.

“Please, kindly help to publicize (share) to those within and outside your organization.

“Looking forward to receiving interested personalities in the Caliphate School of Criminology and Security, Nigeria,” Yusuf’s post reads.

The post also attracted 43 likes 30 comments and 26 share.

THE CLAIM: NUC Approves New courses to be offered at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

VERIFICATION: Checks by PEN PRESS, following the released circular by the institution, shows that the institution awaits the visitation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) on a Resource Assessment, Visitation which is expected to commence on 25th September, 2023, not that the claimed programs have been approved.

Further findings by PEN PRESS revealed that the information circulating about the approval is untrue and misleading.

In a WhatsApp conversation with the UDUS Director of Academic Planning, Dr. KG. Muhammad, he debunked the claim, stating that the programs have not been approved.

“It’s not true,” he replied.

Further conversation with the Director revealed that the National Universities and Commission(NUC) has not even visited the University as scheduled for Monday, 25th September, 2023.

“NUC has not come for the verification yet,” he told PEN PRESS.

CONCLUSION: Evidence gathered by PEN PRESS from the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Academic Planning Unit, revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has not approved the newly introduced (13) Undergraduate programs and (15) Postgraduate programs as falsely claimed by Yahaya Dogondaji and Yusuf Abdulazeez.

In fact, the Director of Academic Planning, Dr. KG Muhammad himself also confirmed to this reporter through WhatsApp conversation that the NUC has not come for the verification yet.

VERDICT: The claim that NUC has approved the New Courses to be offered at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is FALSE and MISLEADING. In fact, NUC is yet to visit the university for the verification.
