A viral message was circulating through social media especially Whatsapp group, claiming that Opay is giving out N10,000 as Ramadan package.
According to Wikipedia, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer (salah), reflection, and community. It is also the month in which the Quran is believed to have been revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
Verification
In a bid to verify the authenticity of the claim, this fact-checker clicked the link provided by the purveyor of this misinformation. Pen Press discovered that the link provided directed our fact-checker to a phishing website where people can drop their account details in order to have access to the gift.

The website shows the logo of Opay with the directive to click a certain place to get the N10,000 gift. To verify this claim, we used WhoIs – a domain lookup tools to verify the authenticity of a website. Through this process, we discovered that the server’s name, called free net, was registered on 2024-08-02 and will expire on 2025-08-02. The lifespan of this website is one year, making it to be one of the phishing sites that used to portray fraudulent activities.
